What Xerocon Austin means to me | Enkel

As Xerocon Austin inches closer we got in touch with some of our accounting and bookkeeping partners who will be joining us in the Texas capital, and talked everything Xerocon and what they’re looking forward to at this year’s event.

Omar Visram is co-founder of Enkel, a Xero silver partner in Vancouver, Canada, and first-time Xerocon attendee.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you started Enkel?

Enkel was started in early 2016 after I decided to take the plunge and start my own business. The concept of cloud accounting was new to me, but the more I learned about it, the more I knew that it was going to disrupt the accounting world. I also knew that there was a need for a firm that did more for clients. While I was used to working with owner-managers at year-end, I always thought that they could use support throughout the year and that they could use accounting as a tool to make their business better. All of this combined led to the launch of Enkel in January 2016.

When and why did you first start using Xero?

We started using Xero almost immediately after launching the business because I believe in using the best tools available to be efficient and to minimize frustration. This is especially true in bookkeeping where most people hate doing their books! After playing with other available options, I realized that Xero’s user experience was unique. It was intuitive and simple. It actually almost felt fun to reconcile bank transactions. Also, the plethora of available add-on tools made me realize that Xero was going to enable us to service all kinds of niches in the market. Today, we are using dozens of different tools that integrate with Xero such as Receipt Bank, Plooto, Expensify, and Jobber. I’m sure I’m going to learn about many more great tools at Xerocon!

What made you decide to go to Xerocon? And who from your firm is going?

Initially I was on the fence about going to Xerocon but a good friend of mine who’d been previously told me I would be crazy not to go! We decided to go because we felt the need to meet other like-minded firm owners and to learn more about the power of Xero.

Currently, we are Silver partners but we’re hoping to reach Gold and Platinum status in the not- too-distant future. Xero is going to be an important part of our growth story and though we use Xero well, I am sure that we could use it even better. What better way to learn about the power of Xero than Xerocon where we will be able to interact with other Xero-powered firms?

What are you looking forward to most at Xerocon?

I am looking forward to learning about how to build a better technology-driven practice. Though I am a nerdy, old-fashioned accountant at heart, I am building Enkel to dramatically change the way that entrepreneurs manage their books. I can’t wait to collaborate with like-minded accountants and learn about the great things that they’re doing. I have already connected with other firm owners that I plan to meet at Xerocon. Another reason I can’t wait for Xerocon is that I’ve always wanted to go to Austin! I’ve heard that the food scene is great – which is super important to me! I’m also looking forward to experiencing the art scene which I understand is what helps to “Keep Austin Weird.”
