Welcome to Humans of Xero! It’s a series about some of the awesome humans that work at Xero. We’ll talk a bit about their work, their passions and what makes them tick.

We’d like to introduce you to Tom Paisley, Social Media Manager. We sat down and had a chat about life in and out of Xero.

Tell us about your role at Xero?

As part of the global social media team I look after the UK social media campaigns. A typical day kicks off with checking our social channels and making sure we respond wherever we can. We have a really vibrant and passionate community interacting on our social channels so the way we connect and communicate with them is really important. We’re lucky to have a social team that ‘follows the sun’ so we always have at least one of our team across the globe interacting on our social channels 24 hours a day. I also work with a variety of teams across Xero to deliver tailored, creative and #beautiful social campaigns that will engage and resonate with our audiences.

Why did you decide to join Xero?

When I first came across Xero I was really intrigued by the engagement and passion of the social community – so many people just love Xero and want to share it on social. This was something I was amazed by, particularly given Xero is an accounting software business, and I was really keen to be a part of what I think is truly unique and special.

What’s it like working at Xero?

I love working at Xero. We have high expectations and everything moves fast (it’s what our #champion and #challenge values are all about) but it’s also incredibly laid back. During my interview process I was waiting in the London office and someone came up and asked me if I wanted to play a video game while I waited – and I did!

There’s a lot of trust in people at Xero and it’s great to be free to my job, be creative, and make this role my own. This is really important when you have a social team that works fast and is scattered around the world. I also value that our opinions are listened to and valuable no matter the level of seniority. And even though it’s a massive global company it still has that real startup feel.

Tell us something #human about yourself?

I love traveling and taking road trips – it’s a huge part of who I am. I also have a passion for food and one of my favorite things to do when traveling is to go where the locals eat. I like to hunt out family run restaurants and try their favorite things on the menu. There is something really special about watching someone’s face light up when you find what they have cooked particularly delicious.
