How you can find work-life harmony in an automated world
The constantly evolving nature of technology means that we are more connected now than ever before. However, this constant level of connection doesn’t necessarily mean we are more fulfilled, creative or productive. It’s even keeping small business owners on the job when they’re supposed to be off, according to new Xero research.
But as Amy Vetter, Xero’s Chief Relationship Officer – US Partner Channel, urged in her session at this year’s Accountex in Boston, this needs to change. She discussed the challenges facing accountants, who need to retool as accounting platforms introduce more automation. As Amy explained, the ability to do so requires looking inward.
“Things are always changing, we’ve gone through a number of changes in the accounting industry over time,” Amy said. “When we have a moment of change in our lives, we have to step back and think about how we retool ourselves personally.”
Never stop learning
Recalling the evolution of accounting technology, from the 10-key machine to the cloud today, Amy described how important it is to take advantage of new developments. In doing so, you can reshape how your practice delivers work, reclaim the time that technology gives you back and reconnect with the things you love.
No matter what stage you’re at in your career, it’s important to keep learning new skills.
“What’s amazing about the time that we’re in right now, is that we can learn how to do the things we don’t know how to with technology,” Amy said. “But if you keep waiting to be the expert, it’s never going to happen.”
When a client asks you a question and you don’t know the answer, seize the learning opportunity. Tell them you’ll do the research and find the answer. Learn with your clients, Amy said.
Plug into your creative side
In this connected age, Amy recommends utilizing creative outlets outside of work in order to unplug. During the work day, Amy said, we’re constantly switched on. It’s important to find the things that help you switch off, for Amy her Yoga practice is one of these things. Unlocking this creativity has far-reaching benefits.
“As we try new things outside of our work, it gives us ways to solve problems inside our work,” Amy explains. “When you hear people say things like, ‘we’ve always done it that way’, this is where creativity can come in.”
As for work-life balance, Amy says that just the term in itself often creates stress. Allow yourself time outside of work to explore your creative side, whether it be painting, playing music or writing. Even if it’s just five minutes a day. By doing so, you can strive for “work-life harmony” as opposed to setting up strict boundaries between the two.
By plugging into your creative side, you can be more innovative at work, align your inner talents with the work you do and have a more well-rounded life.
