Getting Your Accounts (and yourself!) into Shape: Luciano Tesoriero’s f45 gyms
You couldn’t ask for better motivation to start a business than wanting to be the best part of someone’s day. And that’s exactly what inspired Luciano Tesoriero to launch his own line of F45 gyms. ‘When you can train people day in day, day out and always be genuinely happy to see them, you’ve got it made. Our niche is offering people a gym where they can walk into a class with people who want to engage as well as work hard.’
Luciano’s drive to invest in f45
Originally from Wellington, just like Xero, Luciano was formerly the head of operations for a hospitality business. He was sick of a high-stress role where his work-life balance was completely off-kilter. After trying an F45 class in Perth, where in his own words he ‘almost threw up’, he realised he could turn his passion for training and fitness into a business by investing in his own F45 franchise.
‘I’d never had a workout that was that intense outside of a competitive sports environment. I’d never pushed that hard before ‘just because’.’
Two and a half years later, he owns three F45 gyms in Perth. Furthermore he opened his first F45 gym in Singapore in August last year.
Lucaino explaind that ‘Density and location play a crucial role in the success of a service business’. ‘With over 5 million people living on the island, Singapore presented an attractive expansion opportunity.’
Luciano’s gyms are located in busy areas of the City state. Consequently the F45 approach of fast, fun and effective training is perfect for Singapore’s busy workers.
More than just a workout
But more than offering a great workout to fit in over your lunch break, Luciano wants to make a positive impact in people’s lives. A community has started to build within the gym. The social, supportive atmosphere is driving a workout culture focused on confidence building as well as fitness. ‘Seeing the tangible changes in people’s confidence is really inspiring,’ says Luciano. He is working hard to instil the importance of physical and mental well being.
As an avid F45 attendee – I can personally attest to the vomit-inducing nature of the workouts. However there is also the focus on being healthy inside and out. ‘Your body changes all the time, gaining confidence in something that lasts’, says Luciano. ‘When you feel healthy and have a sense of achievement, you become happier and make positive long term changes in your life.’
Simplicity is key from technology to the classes
With three gyms in Singapore very much up and running and a third one to launch this month, much of Luciano’s time is taken up with business development and HR. ‘Compliance, tax returns, GST – manually managing financial data flow – these are the things that can take up time, but we’ve only ever used Xero. We are Generation Y after all!’
‘Xero is intuitive and easy to understand, which closely ties in with how we deliver our F45’s classes’, says Luciano. TV monitors are located around the gym which let you know when you’re done with one circuits station. They also let you know when it’s time to move onto the next one, as well as showing class attendees what exercise they’re supposed to be doing, and how.
‘Everything we do is for simplicity – from our straightforward class structures to how we use technology to drive efficiency. This is why Xero works for us – it manages everything automatically so now work doesn’t feel like work.’
‘Know your numbers!’ is Luciano’s advice for new start-ups – but maintaining success takes more than that. ‘Once you’ve got the model right, it’s not so hard to replicate. What you need to do is entrench your values and focus on what’s important – building a team of really diverse and interesting people.’
Right… time for me to get my runners on.
