Ben McBean, inspirational speaker, former commando and double amputee
Ask yourself this: What if life as you knew it came to a halt today? Would you have what it takes to start over?
That’s exactly what happened to former Royal Marine commando, Ben McBean, when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan in 2008. Much to the disbelief of those around him, he survived and started a remarkable life of defiance.
Ben took to the Xerocon UK stage yesterday to share his compelling journey of survival in the aftermath of his injuries. Ben lost his left arm and right leg in the explosion and his first thoughts were that his limbs might grow back. He said that the biggest game changer of his rehabilitation was his resilience in the face of reality.
Recovery was hell and Ben was close to ending it all until one moment made him realise how lucky he was.
“I was lying there and the London Marathon was on TV. I knew I wanted to do something and that could be it, I didn’t have to – but I wanted to.”
“The will to succeed has to be as great – or greater – than your natural ability or talent,” Ben emphasised. From that day on, Ben found a determination to survive and live well.
Exuding warmth and humour, Ben’s talk made us rethink our priorities. He said it would have been easy for him to sit in his wheelchair and have someone do everything for him, “But where would that have got me?” he asked.
Investing his compensation from the Ministry of Defense, Ben turned his initial investment of £300,000 into a £2m property portfolio in just four years. He attributed his success to his motivation to return to normality – a gentle reminder to never let anything get in the way of our goals.
Ben’s genuine tale of triumph through adversity, a raw and honest account of how life has been after his injuries received a standing ovation from everyone in the Xerocon audience. With a resoundingly positive outlook, he explained how focusing on ability – not disability, regardless of the challenge – is the key to success.
