Xero is celebrating National Volunteer Week, Aotearoa

Every year, about 1.2 million people volunteer and provide a great contribution to New Zealand’s social development, economy, and the environment. National Volunteer Week celebrates the contribution of these volunteers who ultimately enrich Aotearoa.

National Volunteer Week 2019 runs from June 16-22. This year’s theme is “Whiria te tangata – weaving the people together”. Volunteering, Mahi Aroha and social action weave people and communities together.

To celebrate, Xero wants to highlight some of its wonderful staff who make the time for their communities, as well as the awesome not for profits that we get to be involved with.

Community connect

We launched our Community Connect employee volunteering programme in 2018, giving our permanent staff the opportunity to make a difference in their communities for causes they believe in. This programme gives our people one fully-paid working day each year, to volunteer for an organisation that they believe needs a hand.

Our purpose at Xero is ‘to make life better for people in small business, their advisors and communities around the world’, and Community Connect takes us one step closer to achieving this. In the year since its launch, we’ve facilitated more than 2,800 donated hours for the good of community organisations in need.

Nathan Griffiths, Platform Lead says “the Community Connect programme is a great idea which I’ve personally seen benefit several community organisations. It’s also a great opportunity for Xeros to get out of the office and achieve something outside of their normal work environment.”

Xero and non-profit organisations

Running a non-profit is a labour of love. We want to make it easier for those who run charities to have more time to make a difference. Xero can free up your time by streamlining tasks and increasing your efficiency – and, we also offer all not-for-profits a 25% discount.

We’re invested in helping non-profits make the move across to Xero – and one of our recent clients is the United Fire Brigades’ Association. Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade Treasurer Johnny Johnston is pleased with this initiative. “This is a very positive move in standardising the accounting and reporting systems for all volunteer brigades. Already being on Xero has given us a head start, as it were, and anything that makes this, or indeed any future treasurer’s life easier is just fine by me.”

Volunteers such as Johnny put in hours of what can be thankless work each week. Introducing Xero across the board will reduce administration for volunteers who have to meet stringent and regular reporting requirements. As part of our broader work in this space we’re looking at ways we can support more non-profits globally. You can find out more about Xero for not-for-profits here.

So join us this National Volunteer Week to stand together in our differences, and choose to connect in helping local communities thrive.
