Ever dreamed of becoming a viral sensation? For Jamie Skella, this was an accidental reality when, in 2017, he posted an article explaining the basics of blockchain in a simple way. He amassed tens of thousands of comments and likes, as well as syndication in publications such as Business Insider and the Australian Financial Review, thanks to his positive outlook on how this technology may be used to disrupt existing businesses.

What is blockchain?

Jamie knows how to simplify even the most foreign of technical terms, so his explanation of blockchain is fairly straightforward.

A blockchain can be seen as a shared record book, with each addition to this record book as a new permanent line item. There are thousands of copies of this record book, stored on computers around the world, which can all verify whether an entry or transaction is legitimate or not.

It’s got broad applications and it’s decentralised, eliminating the need for a middle-man – and perhaps even for banks to be involved in money transactions. Finance is just the beginning and Jamie says the opportunity for progress is profound.

Disrupting existing businesses

Jamie knows that blockchain can change the future, and it’s not just to do with cryptocurrency. He uses tangible, real-world cases to show what could happen in many different industries, and how it’s already being developed today.

From disrupting the energy industry, to changing the way we pay for music streaming services. Jamie believes it can even change how file storage works.

At Horizon State, blockchain is used as a form of voting where each line item or token represents a vote. With advances like these, blockchain could even have a big impact on the future of democracy.

The future with blockchain

Jamie says that there are parallels between the innovation that the internet can provide, and what blockchain can provide. He believes the importance of both will become very apparent in the next 10 to 15 years.

But, he says, “like today’s Internet, you shouldn’t and wouldn’t have to understand how a blockchain enabled internet works – it just will.” So if you feel as though you’re in over your head on this topic, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to take advantage of its benefits.
