Humans of Xero: Pat MacFie
Welcome to Humans of Xero! It’s an occasional series about some of the awesome humans that work at Xero. We’ll talk a bit about their work, their passions, some fascinating facts, and what makes them tick.
We’d like to introduce you to Pat MacFie, Global Director of Media based in New Zealand. We had a chat to him about life in and out of Xero.
Tell us about your role
At the guts of it I’m a creative. In my role at Xero I use the medium of video to tell the authentic and beautiful stories of our customers and fellow Xeros. There’s nothing more rewarding than getting to explore your craft, working on an idea and watching it come to life on the screen.
It’s not a 9-5 job and every day is different, which is how I like it. I’m often up early to connect with my team located across the globe. Then when I get into the office I might be working on something creative, meeting with people across the business, putting together a creative brief, teaching my team the practical stuff, or actually out and about filming.
Why did you join Xero?
Prior to coming on board in 2015, I’d worked for a number of years as an external contractor with Xero. I had always admired the organisation’s mission and purpose. Being a small business owner myself, I loved the positive impact Xero was having on our partners and small businesses across the globe. Working for a global organisation where innovation and creativity is part of its DNA is something I’m excited by. So when Xero approached me to lead and get their video team up and running it was something I just couldn’t pass up.
What’s working at Xero like?
I think culture is everything and I believe we have something uniquely special at Xero. I love that I can be myself. From how I express myself, to just being able to play my stereo really loud when I work. My team is incredibly talented, and they bring a collective kaleidoscopic view of the world in terms of diversity of perspective and creative thinking. We share a radical transparency and are always pushing our limits in the way we explore our craft whilst just being really good #human beings.
Tell us something #human about yourself
I’m incredibly passionate about my culture and seeing it celebrated and thriving. I have two children and they’re getting total immersion in the Maori culture. In fact, they’re attending a school where only Maori is spoken. I really want them to have a deep understanding of who they are and the richness of their history and heritage. Something that has held me in good stead and is fundamental to who I am.
