Finding the best accounting software for a digital marketing agency

It’s National Small Business Week here in the US, an opportunity to recognize the positive influence of the country’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. We asked Courtney Rambo, Director at Intellitonic, to share her experience starting up with Xero.

When we launched our digital marketing agency in 2016, figuring out how to manage our finances was one of the most daunting tasks. Startup accounting felt like a real roadblock. None of us had an accounting background so it was our first time in the world of numbers.

We started looking around for a modern product with low-overhead and an easy-to-use, intuitive system.

We quickly found Xero. One year later, we haven’t looked back.

Getting started right away

While there was other accounting software out there, it would have required one of us to learn how to use an entirely new system, or to figure out a way to pay for a knowledgeable accountant with a tight budget.

We loved that, with Xero, we didn’t have to download the product and that it was simple. After that, it was a no-brainer.

We signed up for Xero, linked it with our business account at the local credit union, and started approving and sending invoices right away.

It was intimidating at first, but Xero’s option to directly eFile makes the whole process so easy and effective.

We love that we can send our invoices via email, and our clients love that they have the option to pay online, via check, or even cash.

An agency built around Xero

Xero has truly become our agency’s central system – it helps us bill and track our clients and budget for our internal digital marketing needs.

We use Xero’s online accounting services for payroll, invoicing, and taxes and filings – we have few expenses with our small business, but we imagine we will start using the functionality more as we grow.

For now, we will continue to use Xero on our own but we love knowing that we can access Xero’s directory of certified accountants; not only does their list of accountants know how to use Xero, but we can search for one nearby.

Utilizing Xero has helped us transition from a startup to a small business, and we look forward to continuing to use it as we grow from a small to a medium-sized business.
